Community Service Leave Guidelines

On Wednesday, Sept. 26, East Carolina University announced that the Office of State Human Resources added an update to its Community Service Leave policy.

In addition to the traditional 24 hours of paid Community Service Leave offered to eligible university employees, OSHR announced that eligible employees will be awarded an additional 16 hours of paid community service leave exclusively for storm-related volunteer activities. This increases the maximum amount of paid community service leave from 24 hours to 40 hours for the remainder of 2018.

Employees should obtain prior approval from their supervisor and are responsible for providing documentation that additional hours used are storm related. These additional hours will be awarded in Kronos by Oct. 5. All community service leave hours for the 2018 year will expire by Dec. 31.

ECU Undaunted is providing storm-related volunteer opportunities through its FlorenceRecovery.ecu.edu website. Please register to volunteer and follow the directions to sign up for specific volunteer events.

Leave time is provided to the following employees:

  • Full-time permanent, probationary, or time-limited: 24 hours per calendar year plus an additional 16 hours of storm-related leave until Dec. 31, 2018.
  • Part-time (half time or more) – permanent, probationary, or time limited: Prorated proportionately to percentage of full- time equivalent for the position. Example, an individual with a half-time appointment is eligible for 12 hours per calendar year.
  • Temporary, intermittent or part-time (less than half-time): None
